Liabaquet Gîtes & Camping is situated in the Périgord-Vert, the green and peaceful northern part of the Dordogne. A region of rolling hills, dense forests and clear streams — with castles, colourful weekly markets and medieval villages just a stone’s throw away.
The region
Liabaquet Gîtes & Camping is situated in Sarlande, a quiet village in the north of the Dordogne — part of what is known here as the Périgord-Vert: the Green Périgord. A region full of rolling hills, dark forests and babbling brooks. Slightly less well-known than the Périgord-Noir around Sarlat, but precisely for that reason peaceful and authentic. Bordeaux and Limoges are just over an hour’s drive away.
Landscape
Surrounding the campsite, you’ll find the landscape for which the Périgord is famous: dense deciduous and coniferous forests, narrow paths, and flowing rivers such as the Isle and the Auvézère. It’s the perfect setting all year round for long walks, mountain bike rides or a day’s fishing. In summer, you can cool off beneath the tree canopy; in autumn, everything turns a deep orange and gold.
Climate
The climate is mild Atlantic: summers with pleasant temperatures around 28–32 degrees and agreeable evenings perfect for dining outdoors. Spring and autumn are mild and green — ideal for walking and cycling holidays without the heat. Winters remain mild with the occasional frost. Rain falls mainly in short showers; between May and September it is usually dry and sunny.
Culture & days out
The Dordogne is home to many castles — Château de Hautefort and Jumilhac are less than 30 minutes from the campsite and are both well worth a visit. Weekly markets in villages such as Excideuil, Thiviers and Lanouaille feature stalls brimming with regional produce: foie gras, walnuts, cheese and mushrooms. In July and August, there are local festivals and music evenings taking place everywhere in the old village centres.

It is usually open daily from late May to late September. During the high season, the castle is also open in the evenings once or twice a week. You can also book a guided tour here in Dutch. Culture & day trips21.9 kmThese caves are a little closer to Sarlande, about half an hour’s drive away. During the high season, there are also guided tours in Dutch several times a week. One and a half kilometres from the cave, you’ll find the village of Tourtoirac, situated on the River Auvezère. There is a very old church, surrounded by the ruins of the abbey that once stood alongside it.

As well as visiting this charming town with its boutiques, restaurants and a beautiful abbey, you can also go on canoe trips. In and around Brantôme, you’ll also find four castles, all of which are open to visitors: Château Hierce, Richemont, Bordeilles and Puyguilhem.

Set within an estate of around 45 hectares, it is home to some 130 different animal species, including lions, giraffes, monkeys, flamingos and more. And for the little ones, there is a petting farm. The beautiful park, which forms part of a château, is also well worth a visit for its surroundings. A walking trail of around 5 km takes you past the animals, picnic areas and playground equipment.

There is also a fun and educational garden with information about prehistoric humans. There are also workshops for children on cave painting and spear-throwing, as well as a playground. Villars is about a 45-minute drive from Sarlande and can easily be combined with a visit to Brantôme and the village of Saint-Jean-de-Côle.

Not only were the more than 600 inhabitants murdered, but the entire village was also burnt to the ground. The ruined village has been preserved as a powerful memorial. Visitors can also visit the Centre de la mémoire d’Oradour-sur-Glane.
